When we first bought the house, the former owner was using this room for a small office. So I just had it in my head that it was an office and that's how we first used it. When we replaced some of the carpeting it got recarpeted. But after a while I realized it wasn't a very good office. It was pretty small and had only one tiny window.
So I got the brilliant idea to change it into a pantry. It's right off the kitchen and plenty big enough for a walk in pantry. It's pretty much a hodge podge of shelves and stuff that we had around the house and garage. So it isn't pretty.
Someday I want to remove the carpet (who has carpet in a pantry?) and put built in shelving all the way around the room. Someday it will look really nice. Right now it's very functional. And cleaner and more organized than it was yesterday. So here it is before we tackled it.

Yea, I know, I have a lot of small appliances. But with all this room I can have a lot of small appliances and still have room for food. I'm so used to having a lot of room I don't know what I would do without it. So, yes my pantry isn't very pretty, but I love it.

Good job! I agree with Becky functional is way better than pretty, esp. for a pantry. We have a similar room, only bigger, that we've converted into a fourth bedroom for our older boys. But when they leave (next 3-4 years) we'll make it a pantry/mudroom.

We do put a weed barrier down underneath the mulched paths (we use a tarp, because it lasts so very long). Even so, I get some weeds that germinate in the mulch....so it is not entirely maintenance free...but so much easier than gardening on the ground used to be. In those days it felt like all the work was in the weeding! Pulling the few weeds that appear in the mulch is easy, as they cannot get such a good foothold like in soil. I highly recommend gardening in raised beds!

I think functional is great...I did have an idea for you (if you don't mind me putting in my 2 cents). You could use velcro with sticky back around the edge of the top shelf and bottom shelf. Then sew velcro on the ends of fabric that is the same length as top to bottom of your shelves....making them enclosed, but easy to access by just peeling the fabric away with the velcro......just an idea that occurred to me as I looked at your shelves. But as I said before, there is nothing wrong with functional!!!

ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing! Our family has quite a little house and it's always hard to find places to store all of our small appliances, extra bags of flour, and boxes of pasta etc.! Of course, if I took the time to organize our space as you did yours I'm sure I would find I have a little more than I think. :)
